Modern, master-planned family suburb about 49 km west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Blacktown LGA. It was built from 2006 by Delfin Lend Lease on the former Australian Defence Industries (ADI) St Marys site, with housing laid out in five 'villages' — Aurora, Barinya, Brookwood, Talloway and Woodlands — around a central regional park, plus a dedicated over-55s precinct at Rochford Place. Housing stock is contemporary: detached family homes and townhouses on landscaped streets, a deliberate contrast with the older districts around it. The community is young and family-heavy: at the 2021 census Ropes Crossing's 7,280 residents had a median age of 31 (NSW median 39), children under 15 made up about 31% of the population, and couples with children accounted for 63.6% of families (ABS QuickStats; StreetScout). The suburb takes its name from the crossing of Ropes Creek, the watercourse named for First Fleet convict Anthony Rope, on land that once held the St Marys munitions works.

Transport
Bus-based public transport — there is no passenger railway station in Ropes Crossing (the wartime Ropes Creek railway branch that served the ADI site no longer carries passengers). Busways route 759 runs St Marys to Mount Druitt via Ropes Crossing, and route 780 runs Mount Druitt to Penrith via Ropes Crossing, giving direct bus links to both St Marys and Mount Druitt stations. St Marys station, about 3 km south, is the nearest rail hub: it sits on the Main Western line 47.42 km from Central and is served by T1 Western Line trains to the Sydney CBD.
Schools
Ropes Crossing Public School — NSW government primary school, opened in 2008, is the suburb's school. There is no high school within Ropes Crossing: secondary students travel to neighbouring centres such as St Marys, where St Marys Senior High School (government, senior Years 11–12 campus at Kalang Avenue) is based (NSW Department of Education; St Marys suburb guides).
Shopping & Amenities
Ropes Crossing Village — the suburb's shopping centre at 8 Central Place, anchored by a Coles supermarket with roughly eight speciality stores across 5,805 m² of lettable area; the centre was sold to a Singapore-based investment group in a 2025 deal (realestatesource). Local cafes, services and parks are dotted through the estate's village centres. For bigger shopping, neighbouring St Marys, about 3 km away, offers the St Marys Village Shopping Centre and the historic Queen Street town centre.
Parks & Outdoors
The estate was planned around open space: a central regional park with playgrounds — such as the playground on Susannah Drive — and landscaped parklands through each of its five villages. Ropes Crossing sits in the Ropes Creek–South Creek corridor: Ropes Creek, the 23 km watercourse the suburb is named after (rising near Devils Back Tunnel and flowing into South Creek), threads the creek corridors around the estate, and the suburb's edge borders Wianamatta Regional Park — a 765 ha former-ADI national park created in 2008 with sealed walking and cycling tracks, picnic and barbecue areas, and the 9.3 km Great West Walk that crosses both Ropes and South Creeks through regenerating Cumberland Plain woodland.
Property Market
The median house price in Ropes Crossing was around ~$1.05M (house medians to mid-2026): CoreLogic via YIP median house price $1,050,000 on 84 sales in the 12 months to May 2026 (+8.81% annual growth, 22 days on market); Domain suburb data ~$1.04M; Allhomes suburb median house sale price $1,065,000 — while realestate.com.au's snapshot of $910,000 (63 sales, +5%) reflects a different sales window/method (mid-2026). See our full Sydney property price map for how the suburb compares across the city. Everything about Ropes Crossing is new: Delfin Lend Lease developed the suburb from 2006 with up to 2,200 homes across five villages (Aurora, Barinya, Brookwood, Talloway and Woodlands) plus the Rochford Place over-55s precinct. Recent sales include a 4-bedroom house at 31 Herford Street for $1,025,000 and a $1,040,000 suburb median referenced on Domain listings. Tracker medians diverge more than usual (~$910K–$1.07M) by window and method; CoreLogic's 84-sale, 12-month median of $1,050,000 is the most robust figure. The suburb's young-family profile — median age 31 and 63.6% of families being couples with children at the 2021 census — underpins steady demand for its 4–5 bedroom family homes (ABS QuickStats).
New Developments
Ropes Crossing is itself the product of one of Western Sydney's biggest master-planned developments: the Delfin Lend Lease 'Ropes Crossing' community on the former ADI St Marys site, released progressively from 2006 with up to 2,200 homes across five villages, an over-55s village at Rochford Place and a central regional park. The suburb sits in a still-growing corridor: its shopping centre, Ropes Crossing Village (8 Central Place, Coles-anchored, 5,805 m²), sold to a Singapore-based group in 2025 — a sign of investor interest in the area — and neighbouring Jordan Springs (Penrith LGA), developed on adjoining former-ADI land, has continued the corridor's estate growth.
Jobs & Local Economy
Ropes Crossing has no major employment precinct of its own: its village centre provides local retail jobs (Coles and speciality stores at Ropes Crossing Village, 8 Central Place), while the suburb's working residents — most commonly employed as professionals, clerical/administrative workers and machinery operators/drivers — commute to jobs in neighbouring St Marys and the Mamre Road and Ropes Creek industrial-logistics corridor, or by train toward Parramatta and the CBD (realestatesource; 2021 census via quickproperty; ABS QuickStats). Area employment leans toward healthcare and retail (quickproperty, ABS Census 2021).
