Sefton, NSW 2162

Quiet, multicultural family suburb about 23 km west of the Sydney CBD, sharing the 2162 postcode with neighbouring Chester Hill. At the 2021 census Sefton had 6,300 residents, 47.5% born in Australia; the most common ancestries were Lebanese 17.2%, Vietnamese 17.1% and Chinese 14.5%, with 32.5% of residents Muslim, and 25.3% speaking only English at home. Historically market gardens, orchards and poultry farms, Sefton is notable as the birthplace of property group Stockland, founded here in 1952 when Ervin Graf built 19 houses in the suburb. Agents and listings describe it as an affordable family pocket with a small-town shopping strip, large block sizes and easy rail access.

Sefton railway station is a heritage-listed station on the Main Southern railway line, served by Sydney Trains T3 Liverpool & Inner West Line services: platform 1 trains run to Central and the City Circle via Regents Park, and platform 2 trains run to Liverpool. Importantly, the Sydney Metro Southwest conversion affects only the Bankstown line section east of Bankstown (Sydenham–Bankstown, closed since 30 September 2024) — Sefton is west of Bankstown on the Main South, so it was never part of the metro conversion and has no metro station; its station remains Sydney Trains T3, and since the Bankstown line closure city-bound services run via Regents Park and Lidcombe instead of via Bankstown as they did 2013–2024. The Bankstown-to-Sydenham metro (M1) had still not opened by mid-2026, with services to Bankstown expected from around October 2026 (The Guardian, July 2026; Brisbane Times). Bus route S2 links Sefton to Granville station.

Sefton Infants School — NSW government school for kindergarten to year 2 plus pre-school. Sefton High School — co-educational, partially selective government high school at 41–43 Hector Street with just over 1,000 students; the selective section operates years 7–10 with years 11–12 integrated into the community section. Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School — co-educational Catholic primary (kindergarten to year 6), adjacent to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Proctor Parade.

Shopping & Amenities

Sefton has a small local shopping cluster around Sefton railway station on Carlingford Street, comprising the Sefton Growers Market, Sefton Newsagency and a Thai/Australian bistro. The main shopping centre serving Sefton's catchment is Chester Square on Waldron Road in the immediately adjacent suburb of Chester Hill, which Wikipedia says caters for Chester Hill, Sefton, Birrong and Bass Hill. The Bankstown City Library's Chester Hill branch and the Chester Hill Fire Station are also just over the border in adjacent Chester Hill.

Parks & Outdoors

Jensen Oval (Jensen Park) is Sefton's main sporting ground, home of the Bankstown City Lions Football Club. Sefton Golf Course is a council-owned 18-hole par-3 course on 15.6 hectares, open all year round.

The suburb is not on the metro conversion, but its rail catchment story (T3 via Regents Park plus the planned Bankstown metro interchange a few stops east) features in local selling points.

New Developments

Sefton itself has no metro station and no large private apartment or town-centre projects were identified at the time of writing — the suburb's most significant recent change is transport-related. The Bankstown line section east of Bankstown (Sydenham–Bankstown) closed on 30 September 2024 for conversion to Sydney Metro Southwest (M1); since then T3 city services from Sefton have run via Regents Park and Lidcombe rather than via Bankstown. The metro extension to Bankstown had still not opened by mid-2026 — expected from around October 2026 — and does not physically extend through Sefton (The Guardian, July 2026; Brisbane Times). In the adjacent suburb of Chester Hill, Chester Hill railway station received a Transport for NSW Safe Accessible Transport upgrade — new lift, stairs, elevated walkway and platform works — completed in July 2026. Sefton's local development heritage: Stockland, now one of Australia's largest property groups, began here in 1952 with a 19-house project.

Sefton is largely a commuter suburb: local employment centres on the small Carlingford Street retail strip, Sefton High School and nearby light industry, while most workers travel out — by T3 train to the Sydney CBD, or by bus/train toward the Bankstown CBD (the City of Canterbury-Bankstown's main commercial centre, a short trip east) and Parramatta. Chester Hill's larger Chester Square retail precinct and industrial estates in adjacent Chester Hill and Villawood also provide nearby jobs.
