Coastal, quiet, family-oriented suburb about 9 km south-east of the Sydney CBD, sandwiched between Coogee to the north and Maroubra to the south on the rocky coastline south of Coogee Beach. At the 2021 census South Coogee had 5,611 residents — 61.6% born in Australia — in a mix of family homes and apartments, with households predominantly couples with children. Unlike its flashier beachside neighbours, South Coogee has no surf beach of its own: it is a leafy residential suburb of 1.2 km² wrapped around Lurline Bay's rocky basin, promoted in the property press as a lesser-known, quieter alternative to Coogee proper. The housing market itself is polarised between older houses and apartments along the Malabar Road corridor and multi-million-dollar headland homes overlooking the bay — 2025 sales ranged from about $2.1M–$3.1M on Malabar Road to $6M–$8.2M on the clifftops (proplo). The dominant age groups are families in their 40s–50s with children, and OnTheHouse notes households are primarily couples with children repaying mortgages above $4,000 a month.

Transport
Public transport is bus-based — South Coogee has no railway station and no light rail stop; buses are the main way around, running mainly along Malabar Road, the suburb's main spine. Bus route 353 travels north to Bondi Junction through Coogee and south to Eastgardens via Maroubra Junction. L2/L3 light rail stops on Anzac Parade in adjacent Kingsford are a short bus ride away for CBD trips.
Schools
South Coogee Public School — NSW government primary (K–6) on Moverly Road in the suburb, a school of about 16 classes with 34% of students from language backgrounds other than English.
Shopping & Amenities
South Coogee's local retail is a small shopping strip along Malabar Road serving everyday needs. For more substantial shopping and dining, residents head to neighbouring suburbs: Coogee's beachside cafes, restaurants and Coogee Bay Road shops to the north, and Maroubra Junction's retail and dining to the south in adjacent Maroubra.
Parks & Outdoors
The suburb's coastline is its showpiece. Lurline Bay is a small, secluded rocky bay between Coogee and Maroubra beaches — one of the Eastern Suburbs' hidden gems — with calm waters that make it a popular spot for swimmers, families, snorkellers and kayakers, including a tidal rock pool for swimming; it is reached on foot from Seaside Parade to the north or Marine Parade on the Maroubra side, about a 20-minute walk from either beach along the coastal track. The bay carries real local character: a channel hand-carved into its northern corner in the 1920s by Percy Bates, who spent about five years chipping it out to prove wave energy could generate electricity, and a famously fickle reef break that only works in huge swells (OZ Beaches). The iconic Bondi-to-Malabar coastal walkway passes through South Coogee, though a roughly 650-metre cliff-top gap between South Coogee and Lurline Bay still forces walkers inland via Malabar Road and Cuzco Street — Randwick Council's concept designs to complete the link were in public consultation through 2025–26. OnTheHouse counts 12 parks covering about 9.4% of the suburb, and there is no surf beach within South Coogee itself — surfers and swimmers use adjacent Coogee Beach to the north or Maroubra Beach to the south.
Property Market
The median house price in South Coogee was around $4,660,000 (median settled house price, proplo, ~Sep 2026, based on 79 sales in 12 months); Cotality/OnTheHouse's automated valuation put the median house value lower at $3,800,169 as at 31 Jul 2026 (mid-2026). See our full Sydney property price map for how the suburb compares across the city. Medians diverge sharply between trackers because the sales mix is polarised: proplo's settled-sales median of $4.66M (+9.9% YoY) is pulled up by 2025 headland transactions of $6.1M–$8.2M (33 Denning St $8,200,000 and 6 Byrne Ave $8,000,000 in Sep–Oct 2025, 3 Nymboida St $6,100,000), while OnTheHouse's AVM reads $3.8M and more typical house sales run $2.1M–$4.5M (24 Cuzco St $4,500,000, 81 Malabar Rd $3,125,000, 25 Coldstream St $2,880,000, 196 Malabar Rd $2,670,000). Units cluster near $1.4M (4/222 Malabar Rd $1,380,000 and 4/214 Malabar Rd $1,400,000 in 2025). Rental demand is strong: median house rent ~$1,950/week, unit ~$1,025/week. The suburb has about 2,609 properties over 1.2 km² with 59 settled sales in the 12 months to Jul 2026.
New Developments
Development activity is limited and mostly non-residential, reflecting the suburb's established coastal, low-rise character. The highest-profile project is infrastructure: completing the missing cliff-top link of the Bondi-to-Malabar coastal walkway between South Coogee and Lurline Bay, with Randwick Council's concept designs in public consultation through 2025–26 (Eastern Suburbs Mums). A breakthrough came in late 2024 when the council agreed to acquire a Cuzco Street clifftop home for $4.9M from its 99-year-old owner — razing the house to open roughly 650 metres of public coastal access and bring a continuous coastal pathway from Bondi to Malabar a step closer.
Jobs & Local Economy
South Coogee is primarily a commuter suburb: local employment is centred on the small Malabar Road shops and cafes, while the larger retail and hospitality scenes of adjacent Coogee (Coogee Bay Road and beachfront) and Maroubra are minutes away. Many residents commute to the Sydney CBD — roughly 45 minutes by bus — and OnTheHouse's profile of households primarily as couples with children repaying mortgages above $4,000 a month reflects a family-commuter demographic.
