South West Sydney suburb guide — property, transport, schools and lifestyle

Family suburb roughly 55 km south-west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Campbelltown LGA's part of the Macarthur region, established by the NSW Land Commission in the 1970s. Named after an early-19th-century property of Scottish convict Andrew Thompson — who named it for Scotland's patron saint — the land was cattle and dairy farms until 1976, when the suburb name was approved and Landcom began building homes; a primary school opened the following year and the suburb quickly filled with young families. Its Scottish identity still shows in street names such as Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Ballantrae, Stornoway and Elgin. At the 2021 census it had 5,785 residents — 36.2% born overseas, with Arabic (7.7%), Hindi (2.1%) and Tagalog (2.0%) the main languages after English — and median family income ($1,963/week) ran slightly below the NSW average while median home-loan repayments ran above it ($2,000/month vs $1,863), a sign of a mortgaged, family-heavy suburb. Cotality's data shows couples with children as the dominant household type, a 30–39 age peak, 74.5% owner-occupancy and mostly clerical occupations; locals describe a quiet, practical community half-way between Liverpool and Campbelltown.

Transport

St Andrews has no railway station — the suburb is bus-served. Moovit lists Transit Systems bus routes 850, 874 and 875 among services that pass through the suburb (with numerous school routes), and the 875 historically operated as the Minto–St Andrews–Bow Bowing local; the school-bus network links St Andrews Public School on Ballantrae Drive with Robert Townson High School in neighbouring Raby. The nearest railway stations are in immediately adjacent suburbs: Minto station on the T8 Airport & South line is about a 40-minute walk from the suburb's centre, with Ingleburn station on the same line close to the north-east — buses connect the suburb to both.

Schools

St Andrews Public School — the suburb's NSW government primary school on Ballantrae Drive, opened in 1978, the year after Landcom's estate sales began, and still the suburb's only school. There is no high school within St Andrews: secondary students attend Robert Townson High School, whose feeder Robert Townson Primary also sits in immediately adjacent Raby to the west, and which is directly linked to St Andrews by school-bus service 4033.

Shopping & Amenities

The small St Andrews shopping centre at the suburb's heart — shown as the suburb's landmark photo on Wikipedia — clusters everyday shops and services around Ballantrae Drive, including a real estate strip at 91 Ballantrae Drive. It is a local-needs centre only: with no larger retail or civic precinct in the suburb or its immediate neighbours, residents do their main shopping in the wider Campbelltown–Macarthur area.

Parks & Outdoors

Green space is generous for a fully built-out suburb: Cotality counts 11 parks covering about 17.6% of St Andrews' 2.2 square kilometres. St Andrews Park on Galloway Crescent is the suburb's largest — a big open reserve with playing fields, room to kick a ball and a family cycleway (Campbelltown City Council); Ballantrae Reserve and Byrne Reserve on Bannockburn Avenue provide further local parkland (NearMe; LocalityBiz).

Property Market

The median house price in St Andrews was around ~$1.0M (mid-2026): 12-month median house sale price of $998,500 on 62 sales with +6.0% growth (PropTrack via property.com.au) and $999,000 with +8.6% growth (Allhomes); Cotality's automated median house value was $1,051,063 as at 30 June 2026 and SuburbCheck's house median of ~$929K is the low outlier. See our full Sydney property price map for how the suburb compares across the city. The hint range of ~$800K–1.0M was too low: 2026 trackers cluster the house median around $999K–1.05M, with SuburbCheck's $929K the only figure below $950K. Stock is predominantly 1970s Landcom single-storey brick family homes on 550–750 m² blocks plus some newer two-storey infill and villas; 73 properties sold in the 12 months to mid-2026. Demographics skew to young families: median-age-group 30–39, couples with children, 74.5% owner-occupied, 85.5% of dwellings are separate houses in the Minto–St Andrews SA2, and mortgage repayments above the NSW average despite slightly below-average family income.

New Developments

No major developments — St Andrews is a fully established 1970s Landcom estate and current activity is residential infill: renovations, additions and resale turnover rather than new release estates (recent council DA records show residential alterations such as at 13 Elgin Avenue; Microburbs). The newer 'Campbelltown growth area' housing estates the hints referred to sit in surrounding release suburbs, not within St Andrews itself, which has no vacant land of note.

Jobs & Local Economy

Local employment is modest — retail and services around the Ballantrae Drive shopping centre plus the suburb's school — and most working residents commute: clerical/administration is the predominant occupation group. The Campbelltown–Macarthur centre a short drive west is the district's jobs hub (Macarthur Square retail, Campbelltown Hospital health, education), while industrial and logistics employment in neighbouring Ingleburn and Minto is close by, and locals describe the suburb as well placed between Liverpool and Campbelltown for work.
