St Johns Park, NSW 2176

A quiet, multicultural family suburb about 35 km west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Fairfield local government area, part of the Greater Western Sydney region. St Johns Park was originally home to the Cabrogal people and gained its name from the colonial parish of St John; Italian and Croatian migrant families (among them the Bellotti and Gava vineyard families on Bulls Road) settled from the 1880s, and postwar migration kept it a very multicultural area. At the 2021 census it had 6,302 residents (median age 43): 39.0% born in Australia with Vietnam (18.2%), Iraq (7.1%) and Cambodia (6.0%) the top other birthplaces, and 85.2% speaking a language other than English at home — Vietnamese (23.9%), Cantonese (5.5%) and Croatian (5.0%) the most common. Housing is overwhelmingly detached family homes — at the 2016 census 93.1% of occupied private dwellings were separate houses and 50.1% were owned outright — giving the suburb its established, low-key residential character.

The suburb's community life centres on its churches and clubs: places of worship in St Johns Park include St Hurmizd Assyrian Church of the East Cathedral, St Nikola Tavelić Croatian Catholic Church and the Vietnamese Buddhist Phap Bao Temple. St Johns Park Bowling Club on Edensor Road opened in 1954 and adjoins the suburb's park, and the St Johns Park Sports Club (the Jadran Hajduk Croatian Club) is also based here. Cardinal Stepinac Village, a retirement hostel and nursing home, completes the local services.

Clear Paddock Creek runs through the suburb, and its restored riparian corridor contains several parks — from west to east Gawer Reserve, Bartella Park and Marganita Park. The 'Restoring the Waters' project, the first of its kind in Australia, converted the creek's concrete channel into a living stream over seven years with a $1.33 million NSW State Government Stormwater Trust grant.
