Strathfield South, NSW 2136

Established, multicultural residential suburb of Sydney's Inner West, about 13 km west of the Sydney CBD, lying between Liverpool Road (Hume Highway) and the Cooks River, bordered to the east by Coronation Parade and to the west by the Enfield marshalling yards. Historically Druitt Town, then part of Enfield until 1949, when the part absorbed into Strathfield Council was renamed Strathfield South. The 2021 census recorded 3,636 residents, 50.1% born in Australia with the next most common birthplaces China, India, Sri Lanka and South Korea, and only 40.0% speaking only English at home. Housing is mostly low-rise residential — a small shop cluster around Liverpool Road and Homebush Road, parkland and an entirely industrial precinct west and south of the Cooks River that includes the Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre.

Strathfield South has no railway station of its own: its western boundary is the Enfield rail yards, now the freight-only Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre on the site of the former Enfield Locomotive Depot. Passenger rail is via Strathfield railway station in the immediately adjacent suburb of Strathfield to the north — a major junction at the meeting of the Main Suburban and Main Northern lines served by T1 North Shore & Western, T2 Leppington & Inner West, T3 Liverpool & Inner West and T9 Northern services, plus Blue Mountains and Central Coast intercity trains. Buses run along Liverpool Road through the suburb: Transit Systems route 483 (Strathfield station to Central Pitt Street 'via South Strathfield') serves stops such as Liverpool Rd and Mintaro Ave in Strathfield South.

St Anne's Catholic Primary School — Catholic systemic primary school located in Strathfield South at St Anne's Square. Australian International Academy (Strathfield campus) — independent co-educational Islamic school (P–12) at 420 Liverpool Road on the site of the former Leigh College, listed at Strathfield South. Serving the suburb from just across the border in the adjacent suburb of Strathfield: Strathfield South Public School — NSW government primary (K–6), opened 1881 as Druitt Town Public School, whose catchment covers Strathfield South and the southern part of Strathfield — and Strathfield South High School, the public secondary (7–12) whose catchment includes Strathfield South, southern Strathfield and parts of Greenacre and Belfield; both schools sit on the southern edge of the suburb of Strathfield, 457 Liverpool Road.

Shopping & Amenities

A small group of shops clusters around the intersection of Liverpool Road and Homebush Road, the suburb's only shopping strip. St Anne's Square holds the Catholic parish precinct including the former St Anne's Roman Catholic Church — a heritage-listed site on the NSW State Heritage Register — and Strathfield South Uniting Church stands on Liverpool Road. The suburb is well serviced by local parks along the Cooks River (see outdoors).

Parks & Outdoors

The Cooks River runs through the suburb's south, lined by parklands and reserves including Ford Park, Dean Reserve and St Anne's Reserve, which separates the residential area from the industrial precinct. The Bay to Bay Cycle/Walking Path — which runs between Botany Bay and Homebush Bay (Sydney Olympic Park) — passes through Strathfield South along the Cooks River. Coronation Reserve marks the border with Enfield to the east on the site of the former tram line, and the suburb is home to heritage features such as St Anne's Square and the 1937 Coronation Parade arch on the Enfield boundary.

New Developments

Infill and corridor redevelopment characterise the area: the suburb's first high-rise development has been built on the Hume Highway (Liverpool Road). A 2021 proposal approved by the Geographical Names Board in 2023 folded the Strathfield-Council part of northern Belfield (north of Punchbowl Road) into Strathfield South, extending the suburb across the Cooks River. The Enfield rail yards site continues to operate as the Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre, part of Sydney's rail freight network.

Jobs & Local Economy

Local employment centres on the industrial precinct west and south of the Cooks River — notably the Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre (freight and logistics) — plus the small local retail strip and service jobs in Strathfield's commercial centre immediately to the north. Many residents commute to the city by train from the adjacent Strathfield station, which is also an employment/education interchange in its own right.
