Sutherland, NSW 2232

Sutherland is a suburb in southern Sydney, 26 km south of the Sydney CBD, and the administrative centre of the Sutherland Shire local government area. The Shire of Sutherland was proclaimed in 1906 and the name officially declared, with the first Council Chambers built in 1915; today the suburb hosts the shire's council offices, a general-purpose entertainment centre where citizenship ceremonies take place, and a community centre. At the 2021 census Sutherland had 11,570 residents — 71.1% born in Australia, 76.3% speaking only English at home — and the median household income was $1,901 per week. It is a mostly residential suburb whose commercial centre clusters around Sutherland station and the Princes Highway.

Sutherland railway station is the southern terminus of the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line's four-track express section and the junction where the Cronulla branch begins: T4 shuttle trains run Sutherland–Cronulla in about 15–16 minutes, with first services around 5:00 am and last trains near midnight. Intercity South Coast trains also stop at Sutherland. The Princes Highway is the suburb's main road artery, linking it north toward the city and south to the Illawarra.

Schools

Local government schools include Sutherland Public School (K–6) and Sutherland North Public School, with Minerva School providing specialist support (PK Property; goodschools). St Patrick's College is the suburb's Catholic secondary college (with St Patrick's Catholic Primary also in the area), and nearby government high schools such as Kirrawee High School and Gymea Technology High School serve Sutherland students.

The University of Wollongong's Southern Sydney campus is in the adjoining suburb of Loftus, a short distance north of Sutherland (UOW).

Shopping & Amenities

As the shire's civic centre, Sutherland hosts Sutherland Shire Council offices, an entertainment centre and community facilities, with a shopping centre immediately beside the station and commercial development along the Princes Highway. South Village — a modern shopping and dining precinct at 580 Princes Highway on the Kirrawee side of the suburb border (also postcode 2232) — adds supermarket, cinema-style entertainment and cafe options minutes from the station (Stay'n'Play). Sutherland Hospital, the district's major public hospital, is on the Kingsway, and the Sutherland Leisure Centre on Rawson Avenue provides a 50-metre heated outdoor pool, a water polo pool and indoor pools, spa and steam room.

Sutherland is the gateway suburb to the Royal National Park — the world's second-oldest national park — whose Loftus entrance is just west of the suburb, while the Woronora River and Bonnet Bay bushland fringe the suburb's western side. Woronora Memorial Park, the historic cemetery reserve west of the station opened with its own branch railway line in 1900, is a notable local green space. Sutherland Oval has been home to the North Sutherland Rockets football club since 1963, and the leisure centre's pools anchor local recreation.

Health is the suburb's anchor industry: Sutherland Hospital on the Kingsway is the district's major public hospital and one of the Shire's largest employers, with recent MRI and redevelopment funding expanding its services. Sutherland Shire Council's administrative headquarters, the courts and civic offices make local government another major employer, and retail at the station-centre shops and the South Village precinct on the Princes Highway rounds out the jobs base.
