Sylvania Waters, NSW 2224

Sylvania Waters is a bayside canal suburb about 21 km south of the Sydney CBD in the Sutherland Shire, built as the Sylvania Waters Estate by LJ Hooker in the 1960s on land reclaimed from Gwawley Bay, with streets named after Australian rivers (Shoalhaven, Tweed, Murrumbidgee, Hawkesbury, Barwon) to play up the water theme. It is one of Sydney's best-known original canal estates — the reclaimed land was laid out to give homes water frontages with boating facilities, and today it is a quiet, exclusive-feeling, house-dominated suburb: 79.8% of occupied private dwellings at the 2021 census were separate houses. The suburb made its name (and some notoriety) when the 1992 reality television series 'Sylvania Waters' followed the Donaher family at Macintyre Crescent, screened in Australia and internationally, and one of its artificial islands, James Cook Island, doubled as Lois Lane's house in the 2006 film Superman Returns. Mostly residential with three small shopping strips along Belgrave Esplanade, the suburb had 3,200 residents at the 2021 census with a median age of 43.

Three small shopping strips line Belgrave Esplanade within the suburb: Sylvania Shopping Village near Box Road, Sylvania Shopping Centre near Murrumbidgee Avenue, and the Richmond Centre near Richmond Avenue.
