Small family town on the south-western fringe of Greater Sydney, about 97 km from the Sydney CBD and 31 km north-east of Mittagong in Wollondilly Shire. Originally a farming area called Myrtle Creek on the Great South Road, the town grew around its railway station when the Main Southern line opened through in 1919, and takes its name from a local Aboriginal word for the common bronzewing pigeon. It had 5,067 residents at the 2016 census and retains a semi-rural, family-focused character with rural edges around town, while council planning designates the Tahmoor–Picton area as the retail and service hub of Wollondilly Shire.
