Taren Point, NSW 2229

Taren Point is a small waterfront suburb 18 km south of the Sydney CBD in the Sutherland Shire, sitting on the peninsula where the Captain Cook Bridge crosses the Georges River north to Sans Souci in the St George area. It is a mixed suburb — residential, shops and retirement housing — with the residential area strung along the bank of the Georges River at the mouth of Botany Bay and most retirement homes centred on Taren Point Road and to the east towards Woolooware Bay. Once known as Comyns Point (later Cummins/Commins Point), the land was part of Thomas Holt's vast Holt-Sutherland Estate, and Holt Road still carries his name. At the 2021 census it had 1,879 residents, 72.2% born in Australia, making it a quieter, family-scale bayside pocket rather than a prestige waterfront address — the suburb's local landmarks include Taren Point Public School, the Taren Point Bowling Club and the Woolooware Shores Anglican retirement village.

Public transport is bus-based — Taren Point has no railway station. Buses 476, 477, 478 and 303 serve the suburb around Taren Point Road and Captain Cook Drive, with the 477 running across the Captain Cook Bridge down Rocky Point Road to Kogarah and the T4 line. The nearest train stations are on the T4 Illawarra line a few kilometres away at Caringbah and Miranda.

Schools

Taren Point Public School — a NSW government primary school with its original 19th-century school house still standing on the site — is the only school in the suburb. There is no high school in Taren Point; government secondary options are in the immediately surrounding suburbs, notably Caringbah High School, a selective and co-educational government school on Willarong Road in adjoining Caringbah whose catchment listings cover the 2229 area.

The suburb mixes local shops and commercial development along Taren Point Road — including automotive retail such as Bob Jane T-Marts Taren Point — with light-industrial estates around Holt Road and Production Road. Woolooware Shores Anglican Retirement Villages, a large retirement complex on Taren Point Road extending towards Woolooware Bay, anchors the aged-care side of the suburb, and the Taren Point Bowling Club is the local club venue.
