Turrella, NSW 2205

Small, mostly residential suburb in Sydney's inner south, about 10 km south-west of the CBD on the southern bank of Wolli Creek, in Bayside Council. Turrella sits on the railway line between Arncliffe and Wolli Creek, and stays in the shadow of its bigger neighbours: at the 2021 census it had just 2,673 residents, 45.0% of them born in Australia, with the largest ancestries Lebanese (15.5%), Chinese (13.6%), Australian (13.3%) and English (13.2%). Suburb profiles describe it as a quiet inner-south suburb with a family-friendly mix of low-rise apartments and modest homes, plus light industrial pockets around the station (In The Suburbs). The suburb grew when the railway arrived in 1931 and the surrounding farms and orchards were subdivided, and its post office was known as Arncliffe West until 1952.

Turrella railway station (Turrella Street) is on the East Hills line, served by T8 Airport & South Line trains: citybound services run to Central and the City Circle via the Airport, with stopping trains roughly every 15 minutes in each direction. The station opened on 21 September 1931 and became fully accessible after an upgrade — new concourse, lift and stairs — completed in early 2024. Transit Systems bus route 473 runs past the station between Rockdale and Campsie via Bardwell Valley, Arncliffe, Turrella, Bardwell Park station, Earlwood and Clemton Park. The M5 South Western Motorway runs beneath parts of the suburb in a 4 km tunnel.

Arncliffe West Infants School — NSW government infants school at 7 Loftus Street in Turrella; the school's own listing gives its location as Loftus Street, Turrella 2205, and it educates students from preschool to Year 2, sitting opposite the heritage-listed former Cairnsfoot Special School building. No Turrella Public School appears in NSW school listings — the suburb's government school is the infants school — and older primary students typically attend the full primary schools in the adjoining suburb of Arncliffe: Arncliffe Public School (Princes Highway), Athelstane Public School (Athelstane Avenue) and St Francis Xavier's Catholic Primary School (Forest Road) (In The Suburbs). For secondary, the nearest government high school is Tempe High School, the partially academically selective school on Unwins Bridge Road in the adjacent suburb of Tempe.

Shopping & Amenities

Turrella has no shopping centre or supermarket of its own; everyday shops, cafés and restaurants cluster around the station end of Loftus and Turrella Streets, described in agent marketing as within walking distance of the suburb's apartments. For full-scale grocery shopping, residents cross into neighbouring suburbs: Woolworths and Aldi supermarkets sit in Wolli Creek's retail precinct about a kilometre away, and the Arncliffe village shops are just south across the border.

Wolli Creek flows along Turrella's northern edge on its way into the Cooks River, and the suburb borders the remnant bushland of Wolli Creek Regional Park — Turrella Reserve, in the park's Turrella section, is the end of the Wolli Creek Walking Track through the bushland valley (NSW Environment reserve master plan; TrailHiking). A pedestrian footbridge from Henderson Street crosses Wolli Creek to the Earlwood (formerly Undercliffe) side; it was closed in 2012 as structurally unsound, repaired and reopened in November 2013. The heritage-listed Wolli Creek Aqueduct in Thompson Street is also in the suburb.

New Developments

Infill apartment development has clustered along Loftus Street near the station: the Fusion complex, a Meriton development at 3 Loftus Street, places modern apartments about 600 m from both Turrella and Arncliffe stations, and further Meriton-built apartment buildings follow on lower Loftus Street. Turrella railway station itself was upgraded for accessibility — new concourse, lift, stairs and other works — completed in early 2024 as part of Transport for NSW's station upgrade program.

Employment inside Turrella is light — small-scale and light industrial businesses sit around the railway station and north along the railway line. Most residents work elsewhere: household incomes are strong (median $2,137/week, StMate), consistent with a largely professional and commuter workforce riding the T8 into the CBD, while retail and hospitality jobs are concentrated in the neighbouring Arncliffe and Wolli Creek centres and around the airport on the same train line.
