An exclusive, quiet harbourside suburb on the South Head peninsula, 8 km east of the Sydney CBD, with Sydney Harbour along its western shore and the Tasman Sea at its eastern cliffs. Bus-only suburb — Vaucluse has no railway station, ferry wharf or light rail. Routes 324 and 325 run between the city and Watsons Bay along the peninsula: the 325 serves New South Head Road via Double Bay, Rose Bay, Vaucluse and Nielsen Park, while the 324 runs via Old South Head Road, which traces Vaucluse's eastern edge past Diamond Bay Reserve. Buses on the two head roads connect to the city and Bondi Junction, and the nearest railway stations are Edgecliff and Bondi Junction well to the west.

Vaucluse Public School — NSW government K–6 primary school established in 1858, set between Cambridge Avenue and Village High Road in the suburb with about 350 students (NSW Department of Education; EducationHQ). Kincoppal-Rose Bay, School of the Sacred Heart — the independent Catholic girls' early-learning-to-Year 12 day and boarding school founded in 1882 — occupies the corner of New South Head Road and Vaucluse Road at the Rose Bay edge of the suburb. Secondary options nearby include Rose Bay Secondary College, the partially selective government high school formed in 2004 from the amalgamation of the former Vaucluse and Dover Heights high schools, on its Dover Heights campus in the adjacent suburb.

Vaucluse has no shopping mall — retail is a small village strip along a short stretch of New South Head Road, with convenience shops, cafes and local services for the residential catchment. Vaucluse House — the colonial mansion that explorer William Charles Wentworth built into a stately home after buying it in 1827, now Australia's first official house museum — sits in its harbour-view garden estate in Wentworth Road.
