Small, quiet family suburb of Western Sydney about 52 km west of the Sydney CBD, in Penrith City Council's north ward. The area was part of the Werrington estate farmed from the 1830s until subdivision began in the 1880s, but widespread residential development did not begin until the 1970s, when Landcom started building; the suburb's name was gazetted in 1976, so most homes date from the 1970s-90s. At the 2021 census the most common ancestries were Australian 42.2%, English 37.8%, Irish 8.8%, Scottish 8.3% and Australian Aboriginal 6.6%; 80.9% of people were born in Australia, with a median weekly household income of $2,139.

Werrington Downs is serviced by a single bus route, Busways route 782, which starts at St Marys Interchange, travels along Trinity Drive and Pasturegate Avenue through Werrington Downs before heading into Werrington County and eventually on to Penrith — linking the suburb to St Marys, Werrington and Penrith railway stations. There is no railway station in the suburb itself.

Werrington Downs has no school within the suburb — its neighbourhood centre includes a preschool. Local primary options sit in immediately adjoining suburbs: Werrington County Public School (NSW government primary, established 1982) in Werrington County to the south-east, Cambridge Gardens Public School (government K-6) in adjoining Cambridge Gardens, and Jordan Springs Public School in adjoining Jordan Springs (Good Schools Guide).
