Wolli Creek, NSW 2205

Modern, high-density waterfront suburb in Sydney's inner south, about 10 km south of the CBD where the Cooks River and Wolli Creek meet. It is one of Sydney's most dramatically transformed suburbs: a former industrial pocket of Arncliffe — initially to be named North Arncliffe until residents voted for a better name — redeveloped from the late 1990s into a precinct of apartment towers around Wolli Creek station, declared a suburb in 2002. The community is exceptionally young and multicultural: population 10,654 at the 2021 census (up from 6,394 in 2016), median age 30, 46.7% of residents aged 25–34, and just 25.9% speaking only English at home, with the most common birthplaces China (20.2%) and Australia (23.1%). Profiles describe it as an urban, apartment-dwelling suburb of young professionals, first-home buyers and investors drawn by the T4/T8 junction, the five-minute T8 hop to Sydney Airport and the riverside setting (StMate; In The Suburbs).

Transport

Wolli Creek railway station (Brodie Spark Drive) is the junction of the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra and T8 Airport & South lines — built in 2000 as part of the Airport line and deliberately sited to anchor renewal of the former industrial area; T8 services reach the airport stations in about five minutes, and both lines run direct to the CBD. Bus routes from the station include route 348 to Prince of Wales Hospital via Tempe and St Peters, and route 422 from Kogarah through Wolli Creek to Railway Square, with further services along the Princes Highway. By road, the Princes Highway links the suburb north to Tempe and the city and south to Arncliffe and Rockdale, while M5 South Western Motorway entrances at Arncliffe head towards Liverpool, Botany and the city.

Schools

No school campus sits inside the suburb's apartment precinct itself, but NSW school listings include Wolli Creek Public School — a co-educational government primary school in the suburb (In The Suburbs). The nearest other government primaries are in the adjoining suburbs: Arncliffe West Infants School (7 Loftus Street, Turrella), Arncliffe Public School and Athelstane Public School (Princes Highway and Athelstane Avenue, Arncliffe), and Tempe Public School (Unwins Bridge Road, Tempe). Tempe High School, the partially academically selective government high school, is also on Unwins Bridge Road in adjacent Tempe.

Shopping & Amenities

Retail in Wolli Creek is compact and modern. The main strip is the Village Square — a piazza-style precinct at 15 Brodie Spark Drive directly opposite the station entrance with restaurants, cafés, a pharmacy, barber and assorted shops, plus the Village Square building's retail at ground level. The suburb's supermarkets — Woolworths at 78–96 Arncliffe Street and Aldi at 4 Magdalene Terrace — are within a few minutes' walk of the station (In The Suburbs). Wolli Creek is also home to two hotels, the Novotel Sydney International Airport and the CKS Sydney Airport Hotel.

Parks & Outdoors

The suburb fronts the Cooks River and the Wolli Creek waterways. Cahill Park, at the Princes Highway/Gertrude Street corner on the river, offers playground equipment, electric barbecues and cricket and rugby fields, with tennis courts alongside. Discovery Point Park — over three hectares of landscaped waterfront parklands along the Princes Highway and Brodie Spark Drive — has walking and cycling paths, and Kogarah Golf Course and the St George Rowing Club sit on the river nearby. On the creek side of the suburb, Wolli Creek Regional Park's remnant bushland provides bushwalking tracks and barbecue facilities.

Trackers cluster the unit median in the $805K–$867K band: auspropertyinsights reported an $805,000 median across all property types (30,359 recorded sales over 25 years), StMate $867,000 for 2-bed units and knest.ai $857,500 for apartments, with realestate.com.au's tiny 2-bed 'house' sample at $1,125,000. The 2021 census counted 10,654 residents (median age 30) with 46.7% aged 25–34, and the suburb remains one of the city's strongest apartment-rental markets given its T4/T8 junction and airport proximity.

New Developments

The whole suburb is a product of redevelopment: industrial land around the 2000 railway station was rebuilt from the early 2000s into a dense residential and commercial precinct and gazetted as a suburb in 2002. The major early phase was Discovery Point, the Frasers-built waterside precinct along Brodie Spark Drive with apartment towers, parkside retail and resident gyms and pools, later joined by the Village Square piazza retail at 15 Brodie Spark Drive and successive towers on Gertrude and Arncliffe Streets and Magdalene Terrace. The precinct is now essentially mature — most stock dates from the early 2000s onwards, with newer towers still selling off-the-plan, so buyers choose between building age, outlook and proximity to the station and river.

Jobs & Local Economy

Local employment centres on the suburb's two hotels — Novotel Sydney International Airport and CKS Sydney Airport Hotel — plus the Village Square retail and hospitality strip and commercial space above it. The resident workforce is heavily professional and commuter-based: household incomes are high (median $2,163/week, StMate; median personal income $55,692 at the 2021 census, In The Suburbs), and suburb profiles note many residents work in the CBD or at Sydney Airport, minutes away on the T8 (In The Suburbs).
