Yagoona, NSW 2199

Established family suburb in South Western Sydney about 20 km south-west of the Sydney CBD, in the City of Canterbury-Bankstown; the suburb was created in 1927 and its name is an Aboriginal word meaning 'now' or 'today'. At the 2021 census 19,651 people lived in Yagoona, with a strongly multicultural mix: 49.6% born in Australia, 27.9% speaking only English at home, and the largest overseas-born communities from Vietnam (12.1%) and Lebanon (8.4%). The housing stock is largely post-war brick and weatherboard homes with modern renovations and new infill, and the suburb is known for its local trivia — Australia's first McDonald's opened here on the Hume Highway in 1971 (reopening on the same site in December 2021).

Transport

Yagoona railway station (opened 16 July 1928) is on the Bankstown line of the Sydney Trains network, now served by T6 Lidcombe & Bankstown Line services, with T3 Liverpool–Bankstown services also using the line through the suburb since the 2025 metro conversion of the line into the city. The station received a Transport Access Program upgrade completed in August 2022, including a new lift, concourse and station building. Buses operated by Transit Systems link Yagoona to Bankstown and Parramatta, and the Hume Highway (Liverpool Road) cuts through the suburb as its main road access to Liverpool and the city, with Rookwood Road connecting south to the M5.

Schools

Yagoona Public School — the suburb's government K–6 primary, a large culturally diverse school on the Hume Highway with over 30 classes including a support unit (Yagoona PS). Christ the King Catholic Primary School (K–6) is also located in Yagoona (Hockingstuart; Private Schools Guide). Yagoona has no high school within the suburb; most secondary students attend high schools in adjoining suburbs, including Birrong Girls High School (Birrong), Bass Hill High School (Bass Hill) and Bankstown Boys and Bankstown Girls High Schools (Bankstown).

Shopping & Amenities

The main commercial area runs along the Hume Highway (Liverpool Road) near Yagoona railway station, anchored by the supermarket site first developed by Westfield in 1963 — the strip now holds a large IGA-style supermarket and the McDonald's that reopened on Australia's first McDonald's site in December 2021. The RSPCA NSW head office and shelter are on Rookwood Road in the suburb. Yagoona sits 5–10 minutes from the Bankstown CBD, whose Bankstown Central shopping centre and services lie in the adjoining suburb of Bankstown.

Parks & Outdoors

Yagoona is home to Gazzard Park, George Green Oval, Gillman Reserve, Middleton Park, Graf Park and O'Neill Park — all with sporting facilities and play equipment. O'Neill Park is the home ground of the Yagoona Lions football club, a member of the Bankstown District Amateur Football Association, and the suburb also fields the Yagoona Schooners rugby league club. The suburb is close to the Prospect Creek and Georges River corridor on its western edge toward Bass Hill.

New Developments

Renewal is gradual rather than transformational. Bankstown City Council (now Canterbury-Bankstown) drew up town-centre rejuvenation plans for Yagoona, with community-backed initial ideas including a larger supermarket, a new community centre, an improved shopping environment and a variation in housing. The NSW Government abandoned a 2018 proposal to extend the Sydney Metro to a Yagoona terminal, instead keeping the line as Sydney Trains services to Bankstown where commuters change to the metro. The station was upgraded with a new lift and building in 2022, and the Australia-first McDonald's site was redeveloped and reopened in December 2021.

Jobs & Local Economy

Local employment centres on the Hume Highway retail strip near the station, the RSPCA NSW head office on Rookwood Road, and service jobs in the nearby Bankstown CBD — Bankstown Central is one of Sydney's major shopping centres 5–10 minutes away in the adjoining suburb. Many residents commute to the Sydney CBD by train/metro, or to industrial and logistics jobs along the Hume Highway corridor toward Liverpool.
