Yarramundi, NSW 2753

A semi-rural, acreage suburb of Sydney 69 km west of the CBD, in the City of Hawkesbury local government area, on the river flats bounded by the Grose and Nepean rivers and the Blue Mountains escarpment — the Dictionary of Sydney calls it a 'semi-rural settlement bounded by the Grose and Nepean rivers and the Blue Mountains'. At the 2021 census it had 829 residents. The suburb is named after Yarramundi, an Indigenous elder of the Boorooberongal clan of the Darug people, once called 'the chief of the Richmond Tribe'. The settlement was previously known as Kearns Retreat, and the river flats have a long history of orchards, dairying and flooding; the Yarramundi Rural Fire Brigade operates from Springwood Road in the suburb. Yarramundi has no railway station. The nearest station is Richmond — terminus of the T1 Richmond line — in the adjacent suburb of Richmond, roughly a 10-minute drive north along Yarramundi Road; Emu Plains and Penrith stations on the T1 Western line are further away across the Nepean. Public buses are limited: the nearest regular stops are along Yarramundi Road at the southern edge of Richmond, served by Busways routes 675A/675C, 677, 678 and night service N71, plus T1/T5 trains at Richmond — but no frequent through-service loops inside Yarramundi proper, and the suburb is car-dependent.

Schools

No school operates in Yarramundi today. The historical Yarramundi Public School (which operated from February 1875 until January 1908 and was then renamed Agnes Banks Public School, running until its closure in December 1970) was located on the Agnes Banks side of the river rather than in the current suburb (Hawkesbury People & Places). Primary-age children in Yarramundi are served by government schools in the immediately adjacent suburb of Richmond — principally Richmond Public School — with Richmond High School (government comprehensive, Lennox Street, Richmond) the local secondary school in that adjacent suburb.

Shopping & Amenities

There is no shopping centre or commercial strip in Yarramundi itself — the suburb is riverside acreage with a small community-focused footprint. Local facilities include the Yarramundi Rural Fire Brigade station on Springwood Road and Camp Yarramundi, the Y NSW outdoor education centre at 316 Springwood Road that also runs school camps and conferences.
