Yennora, NSW 2161

Yennora is a small (1,675 residents at the 2021 census) mixed-use suburb 29 km west of the Sydney CBD, split between a vast industrial/logistics zone in the west and a modest residential pocket in the east beside the railway. The name is an Aboriginal word meaning 'walking' or 'to stroll'; European settlement followed the 1927 railway siding, and the Yennora Wool Stores (later the Yennora Distribution Centre) opened in June 1971. It is strongly multicultural — only 37.6% of residents were born in Australia, 74.8% spoke a language other than English at home (Arabic 26.9%, Vietnamese 9.5%), and it has repeatedly been identified as one of Sydney's lowest-income suburbs, with a median personal income around $19,000. Small shops and restaurants cluster in Fairfield Street, while the west is dominated by the 300,000 m² Yennora Distribution Centre and its intermodal freight terminal.

Yennora railway station is in-suburb on Railway Street: an infill station opened 6 November 1927 on the Main Southern (Old Main South) line, served by Sydney Trains T2 Leppington & Inner West Line services to the City Circle and T5 Cumberland Line services to Parramatta/Blacktown/Schofields and Leppington. It is staffed weekdays 6am–2pm, is not wheelchair-accessible, and connects to a NightRide bus service. The suburb is also served by bus routes in the Parramatta–Bankstown–Liverpool network operated by Transdev NSW (region 13).

Schools

Yennora Public School — NSW government primary school (K–6) in the suburb, opened 1955; the school's own website describes it as set in the Fairfield area 'surrounded by trees and small gardens where students enjoy large playing fields'. No high school is in Yennora; secondary students travel to high schools in neighbouring Fairfield (e.g. Fairfield High School and Patrician Brothers' College Fairfield, both in adjacent Fairfield) and surrounding suburbs.

Shopping & Amenities

Yennora's commercial heart is industrial: the suburb's retail is limited to a strip of small shops and restaurants, mostly in Fairfield Street. Local facilities include the Yennora Fire Station (Fire and Rescue NSW) on Fairfield Road opposite Fairfield Road Park, the Rosary Village retirement community, and the industrial services clustered around the Yennora Distribution Centre. For supermarkets and larger retail, residents cross into the Fairfield town centre immediately to the west, which borders the suburb.

Parks & Outdoors

Despite its industrial west, Yennora has several small urban parks: Springfield Park, Knight Park and Yennora Park, with children's playgrounds, a sportsground and walking tracks. Fairfield Road Park on Fairfield Road has a large soccer field and lies on the banks of Prospect Creek — the stream forming the border between Fairfield and Yennora — with the Prospect Creek cycleway leading into the park (Wikipedia; Prospect Creek (NSW) Wikipedia). The industrial zone and rail corridor occupy much of the west; the Duck River does not run through Yennora (the suburb's waterways are on the Prospect Creek system).

The market splits in two: the flood- and zonally-constrained residential pocket near the station (older weatherboard/fibro and brick homes on 1950s–60s blocks) versus the industrial west, which sells as commercial/logistics property, not housing. New Developments

Yennora's development story is industrial evolution around the Yennora Distribution Centre (YDC), which opened in June 1971 as the Yennora Wool Centre and is now a Stockland-owned logistics estate of around 300,000 m² — one of the largest in the southern hemisphere, with a connection to the Southern Sydney Freight Line and one of six intermodal terminals in NSW. Stockland received approval in February 2025 and began construction in November 2025 on a new ~40,000 m² logistics facility ('Building 2') at the Yennora Intermodal Precinct, into which DP World — intermodal operator since August 2023 — will expand (Stockland media releases; The Industrialist). A 2015 plan foreshadowed subdividing part of the industrial site for sale.

Jobs & Local Economy

Yennora is a major Western Sydney employment node in its own right: the Yennora Distribution Centre hosts freight and logistics operators including Qube Holdings (freight services running between Port Botany and the suburb on the Old Main South/Southern Sydney Freight Line), Toll Group, Woolworths, Linfox, Queensland Rail and Hume Building Products, plus DP World's intermodal terminal. Smaller retail and hospitality jobs are in the Fairfield Street strip. Fairfield town centre (adjacent) and Parramatta are the other main employment draws for residents.
